19 December 2007.American-Scandinavian Foundation of Los Angeles (ASFLA) is an all-volunteer not-for-profit cultural and educational organization with an international spirit founded in 1939. It is dedicated to friendship and exchange between the five Scandinavian countries and the U.S., and promotes ethnic heritage as a celebration of diversity. Proceeds from all ASFLA activities and events endow a scholarship program for upper-division and graduate students at LA-area colleges and universities. The Home of Scandinavian Film Festival L.A.! The ninth annual Scandinavian Film Festival L.A., sponsored by ASFLA, comes to the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills, spanning two weekends: Saturday and Sunday, 5-6 January; and Saturday and Sunday, 12-13 January, 2008. Scandinavian Film Festival L.A. is Los Angeles' annual showcase of Nordic films and filmmakers, screening each year's Scandinavian films submitted to the Academy as nominees for Best Foreign-Language Film. Held at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills, CA, it also shows documentaries, short subjects and other pictures by Scandinavian filmmakers. Non-competitive, the festival gives Southern California audiences and Motion Picture Academy members an opportunity to see the best in contemporary film from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. Scandinavian Film Festival L.A. is underwritten by ASFLA, with Scandinavian consulates, and generous support of national film organizations, individuals and corporate donors. Read the press release.
