Great Stocking Stuffers
(Continued from home page)

Dear Members and Friends of ASFLA,

It's that incredible time of year when we're all lit up – and glowing – and it's not just the glögg! Christmas lights and candles reflect the warmth of the season. The Finns celebrate Finnish independence. Lucias are adjusting their crowns and carols in Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian, Swedish – and English – resonate throughout our celebrations. Our Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish and other churches are gearing up for Christmas services. We're all texting and calling away on our Nokia and Erikson phones. Holiday shoppers are bringing home Bang and Olafson, Iitala, Georg Jensen, Porsgrund and Orefors! And, of course, some of the best holiday rites and rituals are the edible kind – be it baked, roasted, sliced thin, cured, or reconstituted! Ah, yes, even the cat wakes from a long winter's nap and notices the aroma of lutefisk.

Come January, we'll light up some more! But this time the light comes from a projector casting images on the big screen at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills for the NINTH ANNUAL SCANDINAVIAN FILM FESTIVAL L.A. We'll screen masterful films from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden – giving Nordic film its annual residency in Southern California, and Los Angeles film-festival audiences a chance to enjoy our annual immersion into Nordic film culture. There will be Oscar contenders and many other superb current Scandinavian films.

Yes, the ASFLA elves are working away – even through this fun season – so we can see you at the movies for an Epiphany opening of Scandinavian Film Festival L.A. on Saturday and Sunday, 5-6 January, and finishing the following weekend on Saturday and Sunday, 12-13 January, 2008.

Contact ASFLA if you'd like to give someone on your shopping list tickets to the film festival for Christmas! They make great stocking stuffers.

So, skol and Merry Christmas ... and YOU may provide your own subtitle to translate into a wonderful holiday

Sincerely,

James Koenig, President

and the ASFLA Board of Directors
